Seemed that they lacked a little understanding of the basics of Civil 3D and weren't really prepared to handle technical calls in that area but I appreciated the thoroughness of their follow through to attempt to give it to someone who could handle it.
They attempted to pass it to Autodesk, but in the mean time I installed an updated version of AutoCad, which did solve the problem.
